F0号という、小さいサイズの水彩画を描こうと思った。
ペンと水彩で色々描いてはいるものの、腰を入れた制作は油彩ばかりになっていたので、久しぶりに時間をかけて水彩をやろうと思ったのだ。

はじめに鉛筆で下書きをして遠景を描いた。
なお、手前に木を描くので、この部分はほとんど見えなくなる。それでもしっかり描く。
自分の中で世界を作っていくことが大切。

紙に水を置いて、遠景の反映を描く。
青色がきれいに出た。水彩の楽しいところ。
手前の猫や光の反射にはマスキングインクを塗っている。

木を描いた。この木は逆光なので影もしっかり入れる。
ここまで来ればもう少し。この後、木が水に映り込んでいる様子を描いていく。

One day, I decided to paint a small landscape in watercolour.
Although I occasionally paint with watercolour and pen, I haven't been dedicating much time to it lately, as my main medium is oil. So, I've now decided to approach watercolour painting with more serious intent.

I began by sketching the composition and painting the background.
Since I'll be painting a tree in the foreground, much of the background will eventually be covered. Still, I painted it carefully to create the world within the painting — which I believe is an essential part of the process.

I applied some water to the paper to depict the reflection of the background.
The blue tones came out beautifully — one of the joys of working with watercolour.
I used masking fluid to cover the cat and some of the light reflections.

Next, I painted the tree, using darker colours to show it standing against the light.
I’ll add water again and begin painting the reflection of the tree.

1945年9月2日に日本は降伏文書に調印した。
だから、本当に日本が終戦したのは8月15日やなくて9月2日なんちゃうかな、とも思う。

Japan signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2nd September 1945.
So, I feel that day marks the end of the war for Japan, rather than 15th August.

いずれにしろ第二次世界大戦において、日本はアジア諸国の人々を中心に非常に大きな被害を与えた。非人道的なことも数多く行なっている。
日本が受けた戦争の被害（広島や長崎を含む）を忘れてはいけないのと同時に、加害も忘れてはならない。

In any case, Japan devastated many other countries, particularly across Asia, and committed crimes against humanity.
We, the Japanese people, must not only remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but also acknowledge Japan’s war crimes.

加害の歴史を反省して未来へ残していくことが、世界の平和へと繋がっていくのだから。

Remembering and passing down this history to future generations is a step towards world peace.

これは水彩絵具。透明水彩と呼ばれたりもする、透明感があってとても美しい絵具。
水彩をやりたいと思ったら、普通はお店で水彩絵具を買ってきて使う。
やけど、実は水彩絵具って簡単に作れる。

This is watercolour paint.
When painting with watercolours, we usually buy ready-made paints from a shop. However, it's actually very easy to make your own.

そもそも絵具っていうのは色の粉とのり成分が混ぜ合わされた物やから、その辺の土と水のりでも作れる。
（土は水で洗ってゴミを取り除いてから使ってな！）
場所によって取れる土の色が違うから、いろんな茶色が作れるので面白い。
夏休みの自由研究におすすめ。来年ぜひやってみて。

Paint is made from pigment and a binder. So you can make basic paint using soil and liquid glue.
By collecting soil from different places, you can create a wide range of brown tones.

さて、先ほど紹介したのは身近な材料を使った方法やけど、プロ用の水彩絵具も作り方は同じ。材料が変わるだけ。
土の代わりに顔料、水のりの代わりにアラビアガムを使う。
アラビアガムというのはアラビアゴムノキの樹脂で、昔はこれを使って水のりが作られていた。
ちなみに、呼び方はアラビアガムでもアラビアゴムでもいい。画材以外にもチョコレートやソフトドリンクなどにも入っていて、幅広く利用されている。
（このアラビアガムだが、2023年から続くスーダンにおける戦争の資金源になっているという問題がある。）

It's also possible to make high-quality watercolour paint in a similar way—just use pigments and gum arabic instead of soil and glue.
Gum arabic is a natural resin obtained from trees, and it's used in many everyday products like chocolate and soft drinks.
(Gum arabic is also a source of income that has been linked to the war in Sudan, which began in 2023. It's important to be aware of this when using it.)

これがアラビアガムの玉。これを砕いて粉にしてから水に溶かす。簡単に溶ける。
そうするとアラビアガムのノリができる。
ちなみに、なぜアラビアガムが使われるかというと、天然の樹液の中ではアラビアガムが一番（？）高濃度で水に溶けるかららしい。

These are pieces of gum arabic.
They need to be crushed and dissolved in water.
It is ideal for art because it can dissolve in water even at high concentrations.

こっちは顔料。とても細かい色の粉。
さっきのアラビアガムのノリに顔料を混ぜたら、プロ用水彩絵具の出来上がり。

アラビアガムも顔料も、大きな画材屋さんに行ったら売っているので、興味が湧いたらやってみてほしい。
画材を作るのは楽しい。それを使って描くと更に楽しい。

These are pigments.
To make watercolour paint, simply mix the pigments into the dissolved gum arabic. That’s it—you’re ready to start painting!
You can find pigments and gum arabic in art supply shops.
It's fun to make your own paint.

水彩で犬を描く様子を動画で撮った。
やっぱり薄い色から塗るのが大事。その次に大事なのは目の描き方。
最後にホワイトを加えて完成。

This is a video in which I paint a dog in watercolour.
I begin by using pale colours — this is very important.
The eyes also need to be painted very carefully.
Finally, I add white for highlights and complete the painting.

水彩でリアルな犬を描くときは、淡い色から置いていってください。
一度濃くすると、薄くできないのが水彩です。

When painting a realistic dog, start with pale colours. If you begin with deep colours, you won’t be able to make the painting lighter afterwards.

だんだんと色を濃くしていきます。

Gradually introduce darker or richer tones.

目を描いて、最後に不透明水彩の白色でハイライトを入れたら完成。
